Extension Activities

Research globe BRONZE GLOBE CHALLENGE : Produce a powerpoint of images showing the 'attractions of New Zealand' followed by 'the attractions of Australia'. Include labels of where they are and what the attraction is. Include statements from people who have emigrated to the two countries from the website in the list above. At the end write a conclusion stating which you think is the most attractive from your point of view, refer to evidence from your research and justify (give reasons for) your choice.

Research globeSILVER GLOBE CHALLENGE : Research the number of people killed and injured by volcanoes and earthquakes in New Zealand in the last 30 years using the links above, the powerpoints below and any websites you can find. Compare the statistics with the number of people killed and injured in Australia by natural hazards (including 'wildlife' and 'sunshine') over the same period. Produce a summary to show which of the two countries is more hazardous in your opinion. To what extent could you prepare yourself for these hazards, and what sort of things could you do to reduce the risk of being a victim of these hazards?

Research globeGOLD GLOBE CHALLENGE : Produce an advertising leaflet to persuade a family to emigrate to either Australia or New Zealand. Provide examples of why life is so good in your chosen country, be upfront about the dangers and hazards, but show how these can be overcome, how the risk from them could be minimized, or why the dangers are so unlikely as to be not worth worrying about. Make a case out for NOT emigrating to the alternative country. Include Statistics, images, maps and government advice.
